As soon as we got a glimpse of the filming locations of Yellowstone Season 4, we knew the scenery was already just as beautiful as the first three seasons. I wrote an article detailing the filming locations of Yellowstone seasons 1-3, but they actually changed for season 4. Keep reading to answer the question: Where was season 4 of Yellowstone filmed?
There’s no doubt that this TV series has some of the most picturesque landscapes. When I was doing research for my previous article, I found that most of the filming locations for seasons 1-3 were actually in Utah. While only a little disappointed, I was happy to see that the Dutton Ranch was a real working ranch (called Chief Joseph Ranch) and it’s located in Darby, Montana.
For season 4, however, most of the filming takes place in Montana.

Why did they switch filming locations for season 4 of Yellowstone?
There seem to be a couple reasons why filming moved solely to Montana, but they all center around money – of course! When the show was being filmed in Utah, the production was getting massive tax rebates from the state of Utah. Since about 75% of Yellowstone seasons 1-3 were filmed in Utah, you can see the tax incentives were impacting set location pretty heavily.
Now, of course Utah is beautiful. I’m sure the scenery around Park City played a part in choosing this area for filming. However, you can’t overlook the tax incentives being a huge factor to a major production like this.
After seasons 1-3 were filmed, Montana passed a tax incentive for TV and film productions. I don’t know specific details about this incentive, but it must have been pretty competitive to cause the cast and crew to make the decision to film all of season 4 in Montana.
Where is the Yellowstone Ranch Filmed?
The main thing that has stayed the same for season 4 is the location of the Dutton (Yellowstone) Ranch. I wrote about this location in my seasons 1-3 filming locations article. but I’ll summarize it here, too. This is a real working ranch called the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana.
You can even take a trip to Darby, MT and stay in one of the cabins on the show! It appears that these cabins book out pretty far in advance so make sure you book well before you want to visit.
Other Yellowstone Filming Locations
Multiple sources online say that most of Yellowstone season 4 was filmed in and around Missoula, MT. After the first two episodes, we haven’t seen a lot of new locations yet as the family deals with the attack we saw at the end of season 3. However, as new locations pop up around Montana, I’ll come back and update this post.
I’ve also read a few articles online that say there’s a surprising new filming location for Yellowstone: Fort Worth, TX. Producers have been quoted saying they’ve filmed scenes in the Stockyards and few other areas in Northern Texas.
After watching the first two episodes and hearing John talk about the King Ranch in Texas, my guess is they travel down there to either learn how to become as well known as the King Ranch, to compete against them in some way, or to have the same access to cattle and horses as they do. We will find out soon enough!
