Little White Houses

The Scottish Highlands are peppered (or should I say “salted”) with these little white houses that make me incredibly happy to look at. It’s not rational. They’re just small…white…houses. But I love them. These, in particular, were the view across the Portree harbor.

  • There are a ton of ways to get to Scotland. Plane, train, car, boat 🤷🏻‍♀️ What matters is that you get there! If you’re flying from the US, the two most common cities to fly into would be Edinburgh or Glasgow (or London if you want to spend some time in England as well). My personal preference will always be Edinburgh. What do you think? Do you prefer Edinburgh or Glasgow? If you like Glasgow more, tell me why! I didn’t love this city when I visited, but I want to.   • 1-Day Isle of Skye Itinerary ⬇️ I’d definitely recommend spending MORE than one day on Skye because there’s so much to see, but I know schedules can be tight, so here’s what I’d do with 24 hours here. Firstly, to get around everywhere rather quickly, I’d suggest renting a car (I have a lot of reels about this!) and staying in Portree. We stayed at the Portree Hotel and it was a great location. ☀️8-9am: Wake up, have a quick breakfast, and drive 15 minutes to the Old Man of Storr Trailhead. This hike is just over 3 miles and very steep. You’ll probably want to stop along the way to marvel at the view, so I’d plan about 2-3 hours for this hike. 🥪 12-1pm: Plan to eat lunch at the next stop, or take the longer route and stop by Cafe Cuil. They had a great soup and sandwich and there was a local family inside playing live music when we stopped in! 🏰 1pm: Drive to Dunvegan Castle. It’s about 45 minutes from Old Man of Storr (or longer if you stop by Cafe Cuil). You can explore the castle and gardens for the afternoon. 🍖 7-8pm: This part of Isle of Skye has one of my favorite restaurants I’ve ever been to! It’s called Three Chimneys and it’s quite pricey, but if you can think of a reason to celebrate and splurge, it’s amazing! There are also other restaurant options in the town of Dunvegan. 🌅 Sunset: Drive about 30mins from Dunvegan Castle to Neist Point (or 20 mins from Three Chimneys). You can hike down to the lighthouse, or just watch the sunset from the edge of the cliffs.   • 4 Harry Potter places to visit in Edinburgh ⬇️ 1️⃣ GREYFRIAR’S KIRKYARD This is a cemetery behind the original Elephant House Cafe, where JK Rowling wrote a lot of the earlier Harry Potter Books. She’d often take breaks from writing and walk around the cemetery. When you’re walking around, take a look at the names on the gravestones and I’m sure you’ll see a few familiar ones that made their way into the HP series! Toward the back, you’ll also notice a gate that leads to a school that resembles Hogwarts quite a bit! 2️⃣ VICTORIA STREET This is one of the most popular streets in Edinburgh for ANYONE, Potterhead or not. It’s lined with colorful specialty stores and is just beautiful. @elephanthousecafe has a new location on this street! You’ll also find Museum Context here with a ton of Harry Potter souvenirs you can buy. 3️⃣ DEPARTMENT OF MAGIC This is a cocktail bar where you mix your own potions (aka drinks)! You order a HP-themed drink and they bring out a set of ingredients and instructions for you to mix it. The process usually includes your drink bubbling or smoking like an actual potion. 4️⃣ BOOKSTORES I’ll assume that if you love HP, you love bookstores and Edinburgh has quite a few that are worth checking out. @armchairbooksedinburgh is a vintage bookstore that you could spend hours searching through.   • 5 things I wish I knew before traveling to SCOTLAND ⬇️ 1️⃣ How to properly pronounce Edinburgh and Glasgow. No one corrected me in person, but the internet will definitely tell you when you’re mispronouncing something! 2️⃣ When driving on narrow, one-lane roads, the pullouts to the left are for you, and the pullouts to the right are for cars coming at you (because they’re on THEIR left!). These are used for passing when the roads are so narrow. 3️⃣ Scottish websites LOVE to use the word “walk” to describe activities that others might call a “hike.” Some of these “walks” can be quite strenuous! 4️⃣ Just how much dark history Edinburgh has. It’s fascinating. Here are some of my favorite tours I’ve done to learn about it: 🧙‍♀️Witches Tour to learn about all the injustices done to women simply because they were thought to be a witch. This one was my favorite and I’d highly recommend it! This was a spontaneous tour for me - I walked past a booth on High Street that was selling tickets! 5️⃣ Scottish bothies are small houses that you can hike to and stay in for free!   • My favorite Seattle day/weekend trips ⬇️ I always laugh whenever someone asks me for Seattle recommendations because I’ve spend mayyyybe 2-3 days there since moving to Washington over two years ago. I just don’t vibe with Seattle much. BUT I have been quite a bit of time in gorgeous areas nearby. So, my biggest recommendation is always to spend some time outside of the city when you visit. Here are my favorite day/weekend trips from Seattle: 🏔️ MT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK I didn’t expect this national park to be as beautiful as it is! Literally stunning! We stayed at Paradise Inn which I can’t recommend enough. It’s a lodge inside the park with beautiful views and mere steps from the start of Skyline Trail, one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done. ⛴️ SAN JUAN ISLANDS Island vibes, but make it PNW, and you have the San Juan Islands. You can take the ferry from Seattle to Friday Harbor, or drive up to Anacortes Ferry Terminal to go to Orcas Island (my personal favorite). This can be a day or weekend trip. 🏕️ OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK Olympic National Park makes me think of old growth forests, beach camping, and twilight 🧛. I’m hoping to make it here this summer to have some first hand recommendations for you! If you’ve been and have some pointers, I’d love to hear them in the comments! 🛶 NORTH CASCADES NATIONAL PARK The furthest from Seattle, this national park should be a full weekend or long weekend trip. It’s very underrated in my opinion and not very popular for visitors!
